World Series of Fighting 8 Hits Florida with Inaugural Lightweight Title at Stake

Anthony Johnson at UFC Fight Night 24The World Series of Fighting has scheduled Jan. 18 for its WSOF 8 event at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., company officials announced on Wednesday.

The MMA promotion’s eight installment will crown its first lightweight champion when Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante and Justin Gaethje headline the card, which is expected to broadcast on NBC Sports Network.

Cavalcante (18-7-1, 1 N.C.) is fresh off a finish of UFC veteran Tyson Griffin at WSOF 4, getting the win by technical knockout in the third round. The fight with Gaethje will be a rematch of their original meeting at WSOF 2, a bout that saw Cavalcante sustaining a cut that forced a doctor’s stoppage in the first round.

Gaethje (10-0) has an unblemished record in mixed martial arts. Since beating Cavalcante in their first fight, the 155-pounder has won two more contests, finishing both Brian Cobb and Dan Lauzon. Nine of Gaethje’s 10 wins have come by way of knockout, TKO or submission.

In the co-main event for WSOF 8, Anthony Johnson and Mike Kyle will tangle in a fight that would have gone down at WSOF 7 had it not been for an injury to Kyle. Additionally, TUF 18’s Cody Bollinger will make his WSOF debut in a fight with Tyson Nam.
