Women’s Strawweight Division Makes UFC Debut in July

Claudia GadelhaThe women’s 115-pound division will debut in the UFC next month with Claudia Gadelha facing Tina Lahdemaki at UFC Fight Night 45 in Atlantic City. Fox Sports first reported the news on Wednesday.

Gadelha (11-0) is one of the top strawweight women in the world. The three-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion fights out of Team Nova Uniao in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil alongside UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and former bantamweight champion Renan Barao. She’s the youngest BJJ black belt in Team Unova Uniao history. The 25-year-old was supposed to face Carla Esparza for the Invicta FC strawweight title in December but was forced out of the fight the day before the event due to illness.

Lahdemaki (5-0) fights out of Finland. She typically competes in the 125-pound weight class but will be making her strawweight debut in the UFC. The 26-year-old is coming off a submission win over Karla Benitez in her last outing in November.

UFC Fight Night: Cerrone vs. Miller takes place at Revel Casino in Atlantic City on July 16. The event is headlined by a lightweight match-up between 155-pound contenders Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Jim Miller.
