It appeared that Ricardo Lamas and Danny Castillo, both strong wrestlers, were headed for a three round game of tag with their stand-up striking at Sunday night’s WEC 42 in Las Vegas.

That’s how the fight started out, both fighters searching to find an opening, but Lamas firing off the cleaner punches, combined with stinging leg kicks.

That all changed rather abruptly late in round two, as things often do in mixed martial arts, when Castillo moved forward driving home a straight right hand that put Lamas on all fours. A training partner of Urijah Faber, Castillo wasted no time following the Chicago area fighter down, hammering him with several more punches before the referee stepped in to call a halt to the bout.

“He’s a tough opponent,” commented Castillo after the fight. “I was running my combos. All thanks goes to my corner. I’m just like a machine, they program me to run the same combos and that’s exactly what happens.”
