Wanderlei Silva vs. Chael Sonnen Signed for May 31 UFC Card in São Paulo, Brazil

March 24, 2014

Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei SilvaThe UFC grudge match between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva will take place on May 31 in São Paulo, Brazil, at the Ibirapuera Arena, UFC officials confirmed on Sunday.

UFC Brazil Managing Director Grace Tourinho said during the UFC Fight Night 38 post-fight press conference that the fight is signed and will be the main event for the upcoming card. A second UFC official confirmed the signing to MMAWeekly.com.

Silva and Sonnen have been coaching opposite each other on the third installment of TUF: Brazil, and the two have had heated interactions before and during the show.

UFC President Dana White told MMAWeekly.com earlier this year that Sonnen and Silva engaged in a physical altercation during taping of the show, an occurrence that was later publicized through a viral video.

As of last week, the fight had not been signed, according to comments made by White during a media event in Dallas. The UFC boss added that he intended on getting the fight signed and finalized within the days following.

Sonnen comes into the contest having lost three of his last four fights, most recently dropping a first-round TKO to Rashad Evans last November.

Silva hasn’t fought for over a year at this point, most recently earning a knockout of Brian Stann at UFC on Fuel TV 8 in March 2013.
