Wanderlei Silva Hit by a Car, May Require Surgery

May 12, 2016

Wanderlei Silva was hit by a car on Wednesday and may require surgery.

The news was posted to Silva’s Facebook page on Wednesday, stating that he was riding his bike home after a workout, when he was hit by a car.

Roughly translated from Portuguese, the post stated:

“Note: please be advised that Wand had an accident, where he was hit by a car when he was returning on his bike to his house after a workout. He injured his shoulder and needs surgery today. We ask your prayers for our champion.”

Wanderlei SilvaA short time later, Silva commented below the original post – again, loosely translated – saying, “Guys, have suspended the surgery today. We’ll have to reschedule. Pray for me… We have faced more than this!”

Silva, now under contract with Bellator MMA and Rizin FF, last fought for the UFC in March of 2013, defeating Brian Stann. He is currently under suspensions by the Nevada Athletic Commission for evading a drug test, but is eligible for reinstatement in May of 2017.

He recently competed in a tag team grappling match under the Rizin FF banner in April. Rizin FF president Nobuyuki Sakakibara recently indicated that Silva would be taking part in the promotion’s Grand Prix tournament later this year in Japan. There is no sanctioning body in Japan, so Silva could participate, although it’s unclear how that would effect any chance of him getting reinstated at a later date in the U.S.
