2006 has already become the year of upsets in MMA. Takanori Gomi, Yves Edwards, Josh Thomson, Frank Mir, and Shogun Rua are just a few of the big names that were monster favorites in their fights, only to be upset by huge underdogs.

Last night we saw more upsets as Ultimate Fighter Season 2 champ Joe Stevenson was the latest “name” to bite the dust to a huge underdog. The preliminary fights saw some upsets as well.

Jon Fitch, (remember the name,) from American Kickboxing Academy was dominant against TUF 2 star Josh Burkman. Burkman came out and could not take Fitch down. Fitch had the superior stand-up and frustrated Burkman throughout the fight. Fitch, after winning most stand-up exchanges, took the fight to the ground and sunk in a rear-naked-choke right before the end of the round to defeat Burkman at 4:58 of Round 2.

Chael Sonnen showed everyone why he belongs in the UFC. Following up a tough defeat at the hands of Babalu Sobral, it was Sonnen bouncing back in this one, out wrestling and out positioning Trevor Prangley at every turn as Sonnen ground-n-pounded his way to a unanimous decision. All three judges scored the fight 30-27 on all three cards.

Josh Koscheck looked very impressive as he shook off an early guillotine choke attempt by Ansar Chalangov. Chalangov tried to surprise Koscheck with a guillotine early in the first round, however Koscheck was patient and later took control of Round 1 using his superior wrestling. Chalangov would give up his back later in the round, as Koscheck sunk in a rear-naked-choke at 3:29 of Round 1 to get back in the win column.

Dan Christison and Brad Imes went toe to toe the first couple of rounds as both heavyweights knocked one another down throughout the fight. The fight resembled the old rock’em, sock’em robots game for the first two rounds. Both fighters pounded one another as both fighters appeared in trouble throughout. In Round 3 the fight went to the ground and after both fighters wrestled for position it was Christison defeating Imes by sneaking in an armbar at 3:34 in Round 3. Both fighters were cut and bloody after the fight.

Luke Cummo outclassed Jason Von Flue by unanimous decision. Cummo clearly controlled the fight from start to finish as Von Flue had no answers for Cummo in the fight. A very impressive performance by Cummo. In all, five preliminary fights took place before the main card, with three of the five fights ending by submission.
