Jake Ellenberger vs. Jay Hieron

(Note: This is a rematch six years in the making. Jay Hieron won the first fight.)

Round 1: It’s a slow start with both fighters trying to find range. Hieron working his jab a little bit and eventually lands a good low kick, but Ellenberger answer with a short uppercut that gets Hieron’s attention. Hieron doing a good job slipping Ellenberger’s power punches. Hieron goes for a takedown, but Ellenberger escapes the takedown and lands a knee to Hieron’s chin. Round 2: Ellenberger a little more aggressive to start round two, but eats a hard left hook that buckles his knees. Hieron chases him down a little bit, but can’t land much significant in the follow-up. Hieron starts to get active, mixing up some high and low kicks, landing to the legs. Ellenberger hanging back, trying to find counters and eventually does with a well-timed takedown. He lands in Hieron’s full guard and starts chopping away with hard, short elbows to the head. This is where Ellenberger likes to be, but Hieron slithers out and gets back to his feet. Ellenberger did some damage, however, opening a cut over Hieron’s left eye. Hieron throwing a wide variety of strikes, but nothing is landing. He is keeping Ellenberger at bay though, as the round comes to a close. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Ellenberger.

Round 3: First blow of the round to land is of the low variety. Ellenberger quickly shakes it off, however, and they’re back at it. They trade a few punches before Ellenberger scores the double-leg takedown, but Hieron is right back to his feet. This is a close fight and neither fighter can afford to sit back and wait, but neither is having much luck finding openings. Ellenberger lands a solid leg kick, but has no follow-up to it. He chops again and retretas out of Hieron’s counter-range. Ellenberger rushes Hieron to the fence, but again, they quickly separate without any damage. Ellenberger lands a one-off jab, but doesn’t combo it up with anything else. Neither fighter shows much fire at the end of the round and receives a heavy does of boos from the crowd.
