Takanori Gomi vs. Mac Danzig
Round 1: Danzig showing a lot of movement out of the gate, trying to make himself a hard target for Gomi’s explosive strikes. Gomi is finding a home for the low kicks early, however. Gomi pressing the action a little bit more midway through the round, but Danzig latches onto a Thai clinch and gets the first big scores of the round with several knees to the body. Gomi, after breaking free, counters with a takedown, planting Danzig on his back and landing in his full guard. Gomi immediately moves Danzig to the fence, but Danzig defends well and quickly regains his feet. Gomi clips Danzig with a right hand, but Dangiz answers with a hard shot of his own. Gomi chopping at Danzig’s lead leg and following with the straight left. Danzig answers with a nice one-two combination. Danzig shoots and scores a takeodwn, finishing the round on top, ground and pounding Gomi. Close, close round, but MMAWeekly.com scores round one 10-9 for Danzig.
Round 2: Danzig immediately starts pressing forward, but Gomi is countering well. Danzig clinches, but Gomi punches his way out of it without taking any damage. Gomi starts pressing in on Danzig, landing some good body shots before going back upstairs with a sharp jab. Danzig lands a good one-two, but Gomi counters and rocks Danzig with the right hand. Danzig tries to clinch again, but again, Gomi stays out of it, but eats another hard combination from Danzig. Danzig is using jab effectively in the latter half of the round, clipping Gomi every time he comes forward, and uses it to set up a beautiful takedown. He plants Gomi on his back, immediately going to work from half guard. Gomi tries to et up, but gets caught in an arm-in guillotine. They roll, Danzig maintaining the choke, but Gomi lasts to the horn. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Danzig.
Round 3: Gomi sneaks in a right hand early in the round and Danzig goes down. Gomi bowls him over, landing in Danzig’s full guard. Gomi staying tight on top, both fighters peppering the other with shots, searching for an opening for something more substantial. Gomi stands, but Danzig has a hold of his leg. Gomi deftly escapes, landing back on top in Danzig’s half guard. Danzig scoots to the fence and works his way back up to his feet, eating a knee to the midsection on the way up. Gomi keeps him pressed on the fence, tries to drag him to the mat, but Danzig scrambles to Gomi’s back. Gomi slips out and they’re back to their feet, Gomi again pressing Danzig to the fence. They separate and hit the center of the Octagon, trading punches. Both men look pretty tired. Danzig lands a hard right hand and Gomi postures, gesturing for him to bring the fight. Gomi presses Danzig to the fence again, but it’s Danzig scoring with dirty boxing. They move back to the center of the Octagon, Danzig finishing with the strong stand-up. Another close round, but MMAWeekly.com scores round three 10-9 for Gomi, but the fight 29-28 for Danzig.
