Dong Hyun Kim vs. Paulo Thiago
Round 1: Kim quickly shoots for a single-leg. Thiago nearly locked on a modified guillotine, but can’t maintain the grip. Kim keeps working for the single and gets it, quickly transitioning to Thiago’s back once they hit the mat. Kim has both hooks in and is punching, trying to get Thiago to open up for the choke. Kim maintains back control, biding his time, trying to find an opening. He’s not gaining much ground, but he is wearing Thiago down, riding his back the entire round. Kim finally gets the arms locked around Thiago’s jaw at the end of the round and he cranks it, but can’t get a tap before the horn. MMAWeekly.com scores round one 10-9 for Kim.
Round 2: They clinch up in the opening minute, Thiago landing a hard knee, but it is Kim tossing Thiago to the mat. Thiago, however, snags Kim’s arm and has a Kimura hold on Kim’s right arm. Thiago is maintaining the hold, while Kim remains patient in top position until he finally slips the arm out. Once he gets his arm out, Kim has Thiago trapped up against the fence, Thiago on the mat, Kim standing. Kim is controlling, but neither is able to mount much offense as the round wears on. Thiago finally scrambles and reverses position, returning the fight to the feet, but Kim maintains a clinch and takes Thiago back to the mat. Kim lands a D’arce choke, but can’t finish it before the horn. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Kim.
Round 3: Kim fires off a spinning back fist that entertains, but misses wildly. They measure each other up for a time, then Kim shoots around to Thiago’s back and climbs aboard, forcing Thiago to the mat, maintaining back control, hooks in. Thiago regains his feet, but Kim maintains his back mount until Thiago falls back to the mat. Thiago fights off the figure-four bodylock, but Kim stays glued to his back, punching and hammerfisting him. Thiago turtles up, Kim posturing up high on his back, dropping down some big blows. Thiago rolls, Kim in full mount dropping double punches, but can’t finish the fight. Kim dominates from bell-to-bell. MMAWeekly.com scores round three 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Kim.
