Cerrone is notoriously a slow starter, but he had no choice against Barboza, who came out swinging and rocked Cerrone early with a hard right hand. Cerrone recovered, but whether it was his notorious slow start or being stunned, Barboza took control of the fight with his quicker hands and well-timed combinations.
Just as it appeared that Barboza might run away with the fight, Cerrone stole it back.
Cerrone shot out a jab that sent Barboza’s eyes shooting upwards and his body falling to the mat. Instead of finishing with a flurry of punches, Cerrone locked onto Barboza’s back. He sunk in a rear naked choke, and just like that, Barboza went from running away with the fight to running out of daylight, tapping out 3:15 of the opening round.
Cerrone has now won three consecutive bouts, all finishes.
