John Lineker made a statement in the UFC bantamweight division on Wednesday, knocking out Michael McDonald in the main event at UFC Fight Night 91 in South Dakota.
Lineker loaded up punches and dropped McDonald a number of times before getting the stoppage at 2:43 of the very first round.
The bantamweights measured each other for the first minute of the fight, only engaging in brief flurries. It wasn’t until Lineker landed a right hand that rocked McDonald that the fight changed.
Rattled, McDonald attempted to fight back, but Lineker dropped him with strikes two more times. McDonald landed a few shots of his own and then appeared to get his wits back. However, it didn’t last long.
Lineker delivered a left hook that snapped his opponent’s head back and put his body to the canvas. After a couple more strikes on the ground, Lineker was pulled off McDonald and the fight was stopped.
During his post-fight interview, Lineker called out the UFC bantamweight champion as a way to let it be known he wants a title shot.
“Dominick Cruz, I’m coming for you, baby!” he exclaimed.
With the win, Lineker improves to 28-7 and extends his winning streak to five.
