UFC Fight Night 87: Overeem vs. Arlovski is ready to roll into Rotterdam following Saturday’s weigh-in.
Headlining the UFC’s debut event in the Netherlands is a contentious teammate vs. teammate battle between top ranked heavyweights. No. 3 ranked Alistair Overeem will step in the Octagon on Sunday opposite No. 5 ranked Andrei Arlovski. The two heavyweights easily made weight, but the air surrounding them was certainly heavy.
Overeem and Arlovski both train at the infamous Jackson-Wink MMA gym in Albuquerque, N.M., but deny that they’ve ever been anything more than teammates. Never friends, Overeem and Arlovski say they haven’t even trained much together, despite sharing a gym, so when it comes time to fight, there will be no qualms about the whole friend fighting a friend scenario.
The co-main event may not be as high in the rankings, but it’s just as big, as there are two more heavyweights squaring off. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Stefan Struve tip the scale at the very top end of the division. Unlike Overeem vs. Arlovski, neither is in line for a title shot in the immediate future, but more or less fighting to stay relevant in the division.
