Round 3: Carmont moves in with an outside leg kick. Souza lands to the body. They both miss with right hands. Carmont moves forward with a right hand and Souza times it and ducks under and takes him down. Souza takes Carmont’s back and delivers hard hammer fists. Carmont rolls, but Souza maintains top control. Carmont sits up and tries to scramble to his feet. Souza drags him back down and applies a body lock. Carmont tries to turn into Souza, but Souza maintains back control. Souza lands short shots. Carmont throws punches behind his head. Souza works for a rear naked choke but can’t get it. Carmont desperately tries to get free. He throws shots as Souza behind him. Souza works for the choke again. The round ends. MMAWeekly scores it 10-9 for Souza.
The judges scored the fight for Souza by unanimous decision. The scorecards read 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27.

“I was expecting a tough fight. I was ready to fight for three rounds and that’s what happened. I thought I was going to submit him a few times, but he was able to defend my attempts. I’m in a good place in the division, but if they feel I need to fight again before I get a chance at the belt, it’s not a problem. Getting the title would be a dream come true.”
Francis Carmont:
“I’m very disappointed. I missed my chance for the belt. Jacare is a strong guy. I made mistakes in the first and last rounds. It has been a long time since I lost, I don’t like this feeling. Now I must go back to my training and come back strong.”
