UFC Fight Night 24 Video: Phil Davis Talks Victory Over Nog, Deflects Jon Jones Questions

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

There have been two young talents rocketing up the ranks of the UFC’s light heavyweight division over the past couple of years. One of those is current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, the other is Phil Davis.

As soon as Jones won the belt with a dismantling of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128, the questions have been tossed out to both he and Davis about a future showdown. Jones, of course, is already paired up with Rashad Evans in his first title defense, and Davis was riding into his Saturday night bout with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

After winning a unanimous decision over Nogueira at UFC Fight Night 24 in Seattle, Davis still didn’t have a lot to say about Jones, other than to convey that if the UFC matches them up, they’ll fight.

Davis did have quite a bit to say about his three-round performance against Nogueira. Check out the full video of Davis fielding questions from the media…

Until the other night, I’d heard about Davis but hadn’t had the pleasure to see him fight. And I’m glad.

Davis was anything but Wonderful in his win over Lil’ Nog. He couldn’t muster a two-legged take down and eventually settled on a two or three one-legged attempts that finally brought Lil ‘Nog to the ground.

Once on the mat, Davis was able to control and execute GNP, but it just wasn’t anything spectacular.

He seems like a great guy – a smart dude. He looks strong and his conditioning seems OK, too. Still he is very one-dimensional and NOT ready to take on Jones.

Quite frankly, I don’t think Davis could get the fight to the ground which is his ONLY chance to win. And even if the two did end up grappling, I’m not convinced it would be Davis on top.

Davis needs extensive training on his striking and at least 3 or 4 fights to put said training to work before he steps into the octagon with the likes of Bones. Otherwise, Mr Wonderful will be just another notch in Bones’ belt.
