UFC Fight Night 131: Rivera vs. Moraes marks back-to-back first for the venerable fight promotion, as the UFC makes it a short week following Sunday’s event in Liverpool, England, for Utica, New York, on Friday.
Bantamweight big wigs Jimmie Rivera and Marlon Moraes headline the bill, the promotion’s first in Utica, hoping to make a case for a shot at the winner of the UFC 227 championship rematch between titleholder TJ Dillashaw and challenger Cody Garbrandt.
Rivera (21-1) is currently on a 20-fight winning streak, including all five of his fights in the Octagon. With wins over the likes of Thomas Almeida and Urijah Faber already on his resume, a win over Marlon Moraes would make him a solid pick for a title shot.
Moraes (20-5-1) is 15-1 in his last 16 bouts, including a stretch where he won and was undefeated as the World Series of Fighting bantamweight champion. He lost a split decision in his Octagon debut, but bounced back with a win over John Dodson and a brutal knockout of Aljamain Sterling.
The UFC Fight Night 131 co-main event features two lightweights – Gregor Gillespie and Vinc Pichel – who are on the cusp of breaking into the UFC lightweight rankings.
After Utica, the UFC returns to Chicago next week for a UFC middleweight championship rematch between titleholder Robert Whittaker and challenger Yoel Romero with a stacked undercard that includes an interim welterweight title fight.
