Following Saturday’s UFC 225 event at the United Center in Chicago, UFC president Dana White announced the recipients of the fighter bonuses during the event’s post-fight press conference. Robert Whittaker, Charles Oliveira and Curtis Blaydes took home the $50,000 performance incentives.
Fight of the Night honors went to the main event fighters Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero. Whittaker did damage to Romero in the early rounds but Romero scored two knockdowns in the fourth and fifth rounds. The judges scored the fight for Whittaker by spit decision. Romero missed weight during Friday’s weigh-ins and was ineligible to receive a bonus thus Whittaker banked $100,000.
Heavyweight Curtis Blaydes earned a Performance of the Night bonus for his third-round knockout of Alistair Overeem during the FS1 portion of the fight card. Late in the third round of the fight, Blaydes had Overeem trapped against the fence and unloaded with strikes. He changed levels and took Overeem down and delivered devastating elbows that ended the fight.
The final Fight of the Night bonus went to Charles Oliveira for his first-round submission of Clay Guida on the preliminary card. Oliveira was winning the striking exchanges when Guida opted to try and get the fight to the ground. As he did, Oliveira applied a guillotine choke that forced Guida to quickly tap out.
UFC 225 featured 12 fights. Eight of the bouts went the distance, three ended in knockouts, and one resulted in a submission finish.
