The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Los Angeles this week for UFC 199: Rockhold vs. Bisping 2 on Saturday at The Forum. It will be the promotion’s first foray in the historic venue, which is the former home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings.
Before UFC 199 can take place on Saturday, the fighters on the card first had to weigh-in at The Forum on Friday, although this event marked a significant change in weigh-in procedure for the UFC in California.
Instead of officially weighing in at the 4 p.m. (local time) event at The Forum, fighters instead stepped on the scale for their official weight between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at a nearby hotel. The weigh-in at the hotel was conducted by the California State Athletic Commission with UFC officials and representatives of competing fighters present whenever a fighter stepped on the scale.
The same regulations apply. Once a fighter weighed in, if he or she missed weight, he or she had one hour to meet the required weight. Any fighter who missed weight on the second attempt would then be fined 20-percent of his or her purse.
After hitting the 185-pound mark, Saturday’s headliner features UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold putting his belt on the line in a rematch with Michael Bisping, who stepped in for Chris Weidman on short notice. Rockhold won their first match-up, submitting Bisping in the second round.
The co-main event also features a battle for the belt, as UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz attempts to defend his belt against Urijah Faber, a man he’s fought twice before with mixed results. Faber submitted cruz in their WEC featherweight title fight in 2007, while Cruz won a decision over Faber, defending his UFC bantamweight belt, in the rematch in 2011.
