Edson Barboza defeated former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis at UFC 197, earning a unanimous decision in their main-card fight on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Barboza outpointed Pettis in the significant strike department in what was a stand-up battle, collecting judges’ scores of 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27.
Barboza opened up strong by successfully landing a number of combinations. He opened up a cut next to Pettis’ right eye by landing a well-placed left hook.
Pettis pressed the action more in the second round, initiating more flurries in the frame. Barboza, however, continued to find his mark with left hooks.
Barboza landed a number of significant strikes through Round 3, brutalizing Pettis’ lead leg both on the inside and out. He also landed a number of kicks to the midsection before time expired for the bout.
With the win, Barboza picks up the 17th win of his career. Pettis, meanwhile, picks up a third consecutive loss.
