The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned home to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night for one of its biggest cards of the year thus far, UFC 187: Johnson vs. Cormier.
The card featured two title fights and host of other high profile fights with championship implications. UFC 187 drew 12,615 in attendance for a gate of $5,189,167, according to UFC officials.
There were high expectations for UFC 187, and by most accounts, the fights lived up to the hype.
After Jon Jones was stripped of the UFC light heavwyeight championship last month, Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson battled for the belt on Saturday night. Cormier weathered a tough onslaught of powerful punches, but wore Johnson down and submitted him to become the first new UFC 205-pound champion since 2011.
In the night’s co-main event, Chris Weidman defeated his third Brazilian challenger in a row, by TKOing Vitor Belfort midway through the first round.
