UFC 151 Cancelled: Jon Jones Overwhelming Favorite Over Vitor Belfort at UFC 152

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Jon Jones may be in the dog house of UFC president Dana White and many fans for not accepting a short-notice fight with Chael Sonnen, but his new opponent for UFC 152 in Toronto, Vitor Belfort, is the dog in the fight… at least according to the oddsmakers.

Jones opened a huge favorite over Belfort once the fight was announced. Nick Kalikas of MMAOddsBreaker.com set the initial line with Jones at -925 and Belfort at +625.

Basically, what that means is that you would have to bet $925 on Jones to win a $100 return, effectively making him about a 9-to-1 favorite. Conversely, you would have to wager just $100 on Belfort for a return of $625 if he were to win the fight.

“The fact that Jon Jones is such a dominant fighter, it’s stylistically a bad match-up for Vitor,” Kalikas said in explaining such a favorable line for Jones. “Belfort has struggled with wrestlers in the past and the betting public knows that.

“Jon Jones is gonna have the reach, he’s gonna have the obvious wrestling advantage, and he’s gonna be able to dictate where the fight goes. It’s no surprise the betting public knows what to expect in this fight.”

There have been wider disparities in MMA odds in the past, according to Kalikas. Cris Cyborg Santos went as high as being a 20-to-1 favorite over Jan Finney and again as high as about 15-to-1 over Hiroko Yamanaka.

The last time Jones was in this neighborhood was when he fought Vladimir Matyushenko. Jones was about an 8-to-1 favorite in that fight.

The favorite, of course, won in all of those fights, as is the norm. That doesn’t mean that the upset never happens, however. And that’s why the betting public has been putting some money on Belfort already.

Kalikas pointed out that Georges St-Pierre was about a 10-1 favorite over Matt Serra at UFC 69 and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira went as high as about 20-1 over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou for Pride 33. In both of those bouts, the underdog scored the huge upset with knockout victories, so anything can happen on any given day in mixed martial arts.

There’s also a lot of emotion riding on this match-up, many people rightly or wrongly blaming Jon Jones for UFC 151 being cancelled. That emotion could sway some people to a degree added Kalikas.

“I think we’ll see the line bounce up and down a little bit.”

At least Vitor is the overwhelming fan favorite

    • MRGJJ

      Ha!

  • MMAGod

    So true, bajafox…So true!

When did the UFC turn in to Rudy?? Who cares about fan favorites…Vitor is going to get destroyed plain and simple.

    • Ememay

Yeah, really putting yourself out there by rooting for a dominant champion. Fairweather fan.

He didn’t say he was rooting for Jones, he was just being honest. Jones has acted stupid this week but there is no doubt he is going to beat Vitor.

Vitor is as game as they come. He has to be pumped for this fight, with so many fighters and fans backing him up. Vitor/Machida & Henderson would all be sick fights. Best of luck to him. I’m sure he’s in shape and the weight cut won’t be an issue.

Jon Jones wouldnt fight Sonnen on 8 days notice… hahaha. Thats not a fighters talk. Jones has really dug himself a hole with that comment. The main thing i find wrong with that statement is the fact that Sonnen has the exact same notice. I dont care if its 8 days or 8 minutes. the fact is its an even fair match for both of them. And with all the implecations surrounding that decision, like all the fans, fighters, facilities, and everything UFC, that was so selfish. I really dont think Jones can climb his way out of Villan status now. Even with his few fans still sticking by him, when its a heavy majority, that always settles it.

sorry but lebron is the biggest athlete on the planet just one year after being the most hated athlete on the planet and being labeled a villian the majority hated him

      • MikeMc1983

You can be the biggest athlete in the world, and be hated. Just ask tiger. People still hate on lebron. It’s just the news anchors got off his back a bit.

  • zap

Jones a heavy favorite?? No shit! Lame fight.
If Vitor wins, have Spider come up, kick him in da face again, and take both belts.

  • Ascan_Mayburst

Hmmm…. they both always thank God for helping them win so i wonder who he is going to pick as his favorite for this one….. Maybe innie, minnie, minie, moe?

  • mmafan59

I doubt if Sonnen would have actually fight Jones. Did everyone forget Sonnen tells lies 90% of the time. Just like he claimed to be the real middle weight champion and brought out that fake belt. Sonnen is all bark and then when it comes to fight time he throws spinning back fists and then curls up like a little girl.

    • greaseygranny

Sonnen would of fought him. You can hate on him all you want. Truth of the matter is that he backs up his crap talk. I don’t like him. I do however, think that he’s great for MMA.

Jackson camp and Boner said that one of the main reasons they didn’t want to fight Sonnen was cause he’s a southpaw and they had no time to prepare. Vitor’s a southpaw. Jones knows he would have had trouble with Sonnen. We can bubblegum it up all we want. But the truth is in front of EVERYONE. He had to know they would get mad backlash over not accepting the fight. But they did anyway. Simply cause Sonnen was more of a threat.

      • http://www.facebook.com/ILUVELAINAJESSIE jonathoncarbajal

you misunderstood the comment idiot they trained for a right-handed fighter and sonnen was a south paw they did’nt have time to adjust is what it meant and lmao at he would of had trouble with sonnen

  • soboc1

I wonder how many of the JBJ haters are gonna put their money on Vitor? Since JBJ is a p***y and all.

  • thai plum sauce

If Vitor pulls off the upset, then it’s gonna be nuts.

  • muleyaddict

Go to http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/nike-drop-jon-jones.html to sign a petition for Jon Jones to lose his Nike Sponsorship for refusing to fight Chael Sonnen and cancelling UFC 151.

    • soboc1

Get a life bro. If you don’t like it , don’t buy Nike products…. simple as that.

      • worldchamp

Thanks for reaffirming my point, soboc1. Only a bunch of losers would even care to sign a petition about this nonsense. Just don’t buy Nike products affiliated with Jones. Lame ass fools with their petitions against Nike and Jones. These people need to get lives of thier own!

        • Maine2Alaska

whats the difference? boycott Nike because of jones or petition?

  • soboc1

no doubt TPS, but how many of the ish talkin, JBJ hatin, never touched a punching bag or did a sit up, keyboard commandos would put their money were their pie hole is?

  • Maine2Alaska

i like this match. woulda liked sonnen but just as cool to see belfort come out of nowhere, i just hope he doesnt gas.. this does remind me of old UFC.. love it!!

  • maddawgmar

Yeah, turn down a fight with Sonnen, but take a fight with Belfort. That’s smarter… You know who this sucks for the most. The fans who had tickets.

  • diazfan209

expect Jones to dry-hump Vitor for 5 rounds
