Raphael Assuncao vs. Johnny Eduardo (bantamweight)

Round 1: They trade low kicks early, and Assuncao getting a jump, diving into a punch combo, but it’s Eduardo that lands the first stinger with a punch combination that snaps Assuncao’s head back. Eduardo takes the center of the Octagon, Assuncao circling around him. Assuncao shoots and scores a single leg takedown, landing in Eduardo’s full guard. Assuncao is methodically mixing between punches and heavy elbows to the head. The pace slows just a bit and they get stood up. Not much action for the final minute of the round. Round 2: Eduardo takes center Octagon again, but steps up his pace, attacking with his strikes. He nearly gets Assuncao to the mat, but Assuncao reverses control and stands the fight up, pressing Eduardo to the cage. Assuncao fails at a single leg, but lands a knee to the midsection upon separation. Eduardo fires back with a straight right. Good leg kicks from Eduardo, who specializes in Muay Thai. Assuncao clinches and presses Eduardo to the cage again, pressing his weight on him. Assuncao lands a hard right hand on the break and follows with a stiff jab. They trade a few blows as we enter the final minute, but Assuncao takes Eduardo’s back, forcing Eduardo to the mat, searching for the rear naked choke. Round 3: Both fighters come out firing punches. Assuncao grazes Eduardo with a hard right hand. They break briefly before Assuncao lands a superman punch. Solid jab by Assuncao, Eduardo is having a difficult time finding a home for his strikes. Assuncao continues with his jab, landing several. Assuncao shoots a single leg takedown, but nearly gets his leg caught in a lock, but he has a hold of Eduardo’s leg in defense. Standing, Assuncao drops punches down to the head of Eduardo, who gets warned for repeatedly grabbing the fence. The pace again slows just briefly and the referee restarts them standing. One minute is left in the fight. Neither fighter lands much until Eduardo catches Assuncao on his way in, dropping him with a punch. But Assuncao is immediately back to his feet with neither fighter landing again before the bell. MMAWeekly.com scores round three 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Assuncao.
