Thiago Alves vs. John Howard
Round 1: Alves comes out landing a leg kick and takes it to Howard. Alves with a right hand. Alves stalks him, picking his shots. Howard tries to get the fight to the ground but Alves shakes it off. Alves with an uppercut and then takes Howard down. Alves brutalizes him with leg kicks and left hands. Alves clearly the superior striker, nearly landing at will. They clinch and Alves delivers a knee to Howard’s jaw. Alves lands his powerful right leg kick over and over and Howard is limping. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-9 for Alves.
Round 2: Alves goes right back to battering Howard’s front leg. Howard swinging with bombs but missing. The pace slows a bit as Alves picks his inside and outside leg kicks carefully. Howard continues to move forward but the shots to the leg are mounting up. Alves takes Howard down, driving him to the cage and slamming him to the canvas. Inside Howard’s guard Alves lands punches, short elbows and hammer fists. The round ends and Alves still looks fresh. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-9 for Alves.
Round 3: Alves works his leg kicks and Howard tries to time a counter flurry. Howard goes for a takedown but Alves defends well. Howard with a leg kick of his own. Howard’s punches are wide and Alves is able to slip in the pocket and land and get out. Alves lands a right hand that knocks Howard down, but he immediately pops back to his feet. They stand toe-to-toe in the center of the Octagon. Alves wins the exchange. Howard tires to come on in the closing seconds but Alves’ superior striking technique is too much.
