On Sept. 9, UFC president Dana White announced that former featherweight titleholder Dominick Cruz would return to action to try and win back the title that he never lost against current champion T.J. Dillashaw on Jan. 17 in Boston. While the event had a date and location, the venue wasn’t revealed until Thursday.
UFC Fight Night 81: Dillashaw vs. Cruz will take place at Boston’s TD Garden. The home of the Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics has the capacity to seat just over 19,000 spectators.
After defeating Demetrious Johnson in October 2011 in his second UFC title defense, Cruz was sidelined for nearly three years due to reoccurring knee problems. He was ultimately stripped of the belt due to his injuries.
He returned at UFC 178 in September 2014 with a Performance of the Night win over Takeya Mizugaki. Following the 61-second win, another knee injury forced Cruz back into rehabilitation. Healthy again and eager to reclaim the title, Cruz hopes to show that he’s the real king of the UFC’s 135-pound division when he faces Dillashaw in January.
