Episode 8 of The Ultimate Fighter: Undefeated featured the final bout of the preliminary round between Team Cormier’s first pick Tyler Diamond and Team Moicic’s last pick Dulani Perry. Two fighters received a second chance in the competition and the semi-final round matchups were announced.
The Fight: Tyler Diamond vs. Dulani Perry
Perry had been the most vocal fighter in the fighter house and it was finally time to back up his smack talk. At the sound of the bell in the opening round, Perry landed a kick to the check of Diamond. That’s about the extent of his success in the fight. Diamond closed the distance and worked for a takedown and Perry pulled guard. Diamond spend the remainder of the round on his back absorbing punches and elbows. At the end of the frame, Perry was bloodied from a cut above his right eye.
In the second frame, Diamond landed a right hand that dropped Perry. Diamond delivered a kick to Perry’s legs and then followed him to the canvas and picked back up where he left off in round one. Perry desperately tried to get back to his feet and rolled to his stomach. As he tried to stand, Diamond applied a guillotine choke that forced Perry to tap out.
“I won my fight. I’m the far superior fighter. I knew I could do whatever I wanted to to Dulani, so I did it and I got the finish. I’m happy about that,” said Diamond following the win. “I’m ready to win this next fight and change my life. It’s overwhelming to think about. I’m super excited.”
“I faced a guy today that made me feel like I didn’t know anything. Now I just know that I’m not as good on the ground as I thought I was,” said Perry after the one-sided loss. “I’d rather work on my weaknesses and make them my strengths now so that when I get to the top nobody can take me off of the top. That’s what I’m looking to do, just work hard and get back in the gym and maximize my potential as a martial artist.
Two Fighters Get New Life in the Competition
Team Cormier won six of the eight quarter-final bouts, but lightweight Luis Pena and featherweight Ricky Steele suffered injuries in the wins that prevented them from continuing in the tournament. Two fighters were given the opportunity to come back and both were from Team Miocic.
John Gunther, who lost the first fight of the season in quick fashion, was brought back into the competition. Lightweight Jay Cucciniello, who was defeated by Team Cormier’s Bryce Mitchell in episode 4, also got a rebirth into the semi-finals.
Semifinal Matchups Announced
With eight fights in the books, the coaches sat down with UFC president Dana White and mapped out the semi-final bouts. The fighters were brought into the gym where they found out who would face whom.
The first semifinal bout will be in the lightweight division between Team Miocic teammates Mike Trizano and John Gunther. The second semifinal round matchup will between featherweights Brad Katona of and Bryce Mitchell of Team Cormier. In the third semifinal bout, Team Cormier’s Joe Giannetti will face off against Team Miocic’s Allan Zuniga. The final bout to determine who makes it to the finals will be between top featherweight Tyler Diamond of Team Cormier and Team Miocic’s Jay Cucciniello.
