Finishing his training in Florida, Spencer “The King” Fisher returns to the Octagon Thursday night at Ultimate Fight Night. His opponent is Hermes Franca, another talented lightweight in the UFC’s bolstering 155-pound division. In what many consider will be the fight of the night, Fisher seeks to add the biggest win of his career to his resume and move one step closer to title contention. The Miletich fighter recently spoke with MMAWeekly about his opponent and what to expect this Thursday night.

Miletich Fighting Systems has produced some of the most successful champions in MMA and is known for having a deep stable of talented fighters. Fisher has been training with Josh Neer, Jason Reinhardt and “the same group of guys that I always work with who are out here with me now. I’m just in the final stages of cutting weight. I’m ready to go, I’m anxious.”

Hermes Franca, the current AFC Lightweight Champion and former WEC Lightweight Champion, had a busy year in 2006, defeating all seven of his opponents including impressive KO victories over Ryan Schultz and Gabe Ruediger. So how has Spencer been preparing for such a formidable opponent? “Not anything different. Just working on my takedown defense, which is my weak part of my game anyhow,” revealed Fisher. “I’d like to keep this fight standing. I’ve worked on wrestling and I just think it’s a great fight for me.”

“I think Hermes is going to be my toughest fight to date in the UFC just because he’s been there with everybody. I’m looking forward to it,” added the North Carolina-born fighter.

At UFC 58, Sam Stout was originally scheduled to face Kenny Florian. The former Ultimate Fighter contestant was forced to withdraw due to an injury. On a very short two days’ notice, Fisher replaced Florian to face the Canadian native. Although the Miletich fighter received praise for cutting a lot of weight and helping the UFC out, Fisher would go on to lose a close split decision to Stout. Spencer commented about the possibility of a rematch with the “Hands of Stone”. “Of course. Any loss, you want to redeem yourself. Let Sam get a couple wins and fight again.”

A win over Franca could put “The King” in contention for a shot at current UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk’s belt. Does Spencer Fisher think he would be deserving of a title shot? “Yes I do,” responded the UFC veteran. “I think Hermes is one of the top three in that division. Do I think that I belong up there? Yes, I think I do.”

“I think it’s going to be the fight of the night. It’s going to be fast paced fight. Too bad there’s got to be a loser in this one, but I don’t plan on losing. I think I can take him apart and take him out if he gets overly excited.”
