Mike Swick is out of the Spike TV January 16th event where he was scheduled to take on Jorge Rivera. Swick injured his left knee while sparring at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in preparation for his bout with Rivera.

Swick told MMAWeekly that his MCL is either “sprained or torn.” He explained that “while I was throwing a kick with all my weight on my left leg, I received a leg kick to his left knee injuring my MCL”.

At this point, the extent of the injury is unknown, but what is known is Mike Swick is definitely off the Jan. 16th card. Swick will have to wait for the results of an MRI to know whether the injury will require surgery or not.

If it is a sprain, Swick said that he will be out of action for a month or two. If it is torn, it will require surgery to repair.

MMAWeekly contacted Jorge Rivera who had heard the news of Swick’s injury. Rivera revealed that Swick’s replacement looks to be Chris Leben. About fighting Swick or Leben, Jorge said, “I was excited either way.” He added, “Leben’s tough, he’s got a good chin, and good hands…I’m excited man.”
