Following the success of August’s Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman event, the promotion continues its support of women’s mixed martial arts. A bout pitting Amanda Nunes against Cat Zingano was added to the Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy fight card slated for Sept. 29 in Sacramento, Calif.
Nunes (7-2) is a Strikeforce veteran, but had her rocket ride to a title shot derailed by Alexis Davis at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov. She had been on a six-fight winning streak prior to the loss. Nunes rebounded recently at Invicta FC 2 in July, submitting Raquel Pa’aluhi.
Her road to a shot at Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey won’t be an easy one, though. Zingano isn’t very well known on the international circuit yet, but she brings a 6-0 record into her Strikeforce debut, including victories over the likes of Carina Damm and Takayo Hashi.
The two are expected to square off on the preliminary portion of the fight card headlined by Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, who puts his belt on the line against No. 1 contender Pat Healy.
