Strikeforce will officially close its doors on Jan. 12, 2013, with their final card on Showtime headlined by the welterweight title fight between Nate Marquardt and Tarec Saffiedine.
The promotion made the announcement on Thursday, confirming that Strikeforce will be coming to an end following Marquardt vs. Saffiedine.
“Since 2009, Showtime has been a great partner and we appreciate its support of Strikeforce and our athletes. For our final event, we’ve loaded the card with some outstanding fights. This is going to be a memorable night for the sport of mixed martial arts,” said Scott Coker, Strikeforce founder and CEO.
Strikeforce first entered into the MMA market in 2006 after successfully promoting kickboxing matches for several years.
Over the years, Strikeforce promoted some of the biggest names in MMA including former heavyweight king Fedor Emelianenko, as well as providing a home and launching pad for women’s MMA over the years.
Stars like Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey flourished under the Strikeforce banner while they promoted women’s MMA after EliteXC disbanded years earlier.
Now for its final card, Strikeforce will feature several prominent stars including Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier, and former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett.
Here is the full line-up for the final Strikeforce Jan. 12 fight card. The event airs from Oklahoma City’s Chesapeake Energy Arena at 10 p.m. ET (tape delayed on the west coast):
