On September 16th, SportFight held its 12th event, appropriately entitled “Breakout”. Headed by Team Quest leaders Matt Lindland and Randy Couture, SportFight showed the organization, talent, and support to not only “breakout” but to break through as a premier MMA event.

Sprinkled throughout the crowd were such MMA luminaries as Ken Shamrock, Dennis Hallman, Nate Quarry, Chris Leben, and Josh Barnett, to name but a few. The crowd of more than 4,000 at the Rose Garden started the night loud and excited and the high energy level didn’t leave the build until the last fight was over.

One of the young talents that showed promise was 22-year-old Ian Loveland. Having gone 5-0 as an amateur, he was making his professional debut. After dominating the first round, Loveland landed several big knees on his opponent, Brian Caraway (8-2), followed by a vicious kick. He finished the fight with a few ground and pound punches to get the win his professional opener. When asked how he felt after the fight, Loveland’s only reply was, “I love fighting for SportFight and I love fighting for Matt (Lindland)”.

The night was capped off with title victories by Jeff Monson and Matt Horwich. Defeating Jay White for a second time, Monson racked up his 11th consecutive victory in his attempts to reestablish himself as a fource in the heavyweight division. Horwich imposing his will over Lion’s Den fighter Vernon “Tiger” White, drug White down several times before finally submitting him by Rear Naked Choke at 2:38 in the second round to improve his professional record to 13-4-1.
