It’s probably a safe assumption that the UFC and Spike TV aren’t going to be exchanging holiday cards this upcoming season.
On the heels of the UFC’s announcement that they will be shifting to Fox in 2012, Spike TV has opted to counter program the promotion’s debut on the network with a special 3-hour block of programming titled Dos Santos vs. Velasquez: Unleashed for the Heavyweight Title.
The programming airs from 9pm to 12am ET with several Unleashed episodes airing, featuring some of the best fights for both Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velaquez.
The shows will air at the same time the UFC on Fox debuts with Cain Velasquez defending his UFC heavyweight title against Junior Dos Santos.
The block shows the following fights:
Jon Jones vs. Ryan Bader
Junior Dos Santos vs. Shane Carwin
Cain Velasquez vs. Brock Lesnar
Junior Dos Santos vs. Mirko “Cro Cop”
Tyson Griffin vs. Hermes France
Thiago Silva vs. Keith Jardine
Cain Velasquez vs. Minotauro Nogueira
Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg
Pat Barry vs Antoni Hardonk
Mark Munoz vs Kendall Grove
Programming for the night will also include the welterweight finals for Bellator Fighting Championships which kicks off at 7pm ET on MTV2.
This is the latest tit for tat between Spike TV and the UFC, who have worked together for the past several years, but will soon sever ties when the promotion moves to Fox and FX in 2012.
Spike TV still owns the rights to UFC programming through 2012, but unless the organization purchases the library back from the cable network, Spike cannot enter into a new agreement with a rival MMA promotion like Bellator.
Bellator has long been rumored to move to Spike TV once the UFC leaves the network, but as of right now it appears that move will be put on hold unless something is worked out between the two organizations.
