Since winning Pride’s middleweight Grand Prix in 2005, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has been considered one of the top 205lb fighters in the world and is currently ranked #1 in that weight class by MMAWeekly.com but now the Chute Boxe fighter is finally set to make his UFC debut on September 22nd in Anaheim where he will take on Ryoto “Lyoto” Machida.

Shogun has been waiting to make his official debut in the Octagon after the organization made the announcement some months ago that they had signed him to a deal that would put him in the UFC. Rua has faced and defeated some of the top names in the 205lb division over the last few years including Ricardo Arona, Quinton Jackson, Kazuhiro Nakamura and many others along the way.

Lyoto Machida is currently undefeated as a professional fighter and came to the UFC as part of the buy out of the WFA and has 2 wins under his belt since coming into the organization. Machida had already gained much hype and notoriety by knocking out former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin back in 2003 and now he will face the toughest competition of his career when he squares off against Shogun.

With so much hype leading into Shogun’s debut and seeing as Machida is top competition, it would make sense that if the Chute Boxe fighter can defeat Lyoto he would be set up perfectly to face the winner of the fight between Dan Henderson and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson which will unify the light heavyweight belts on September 5th in England.

UFC 76 will take place in Anaheim, California on September 22nd where Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will make his official Octagon debut against Lyoto Machida.
