Over the past two and a half years, Jake Shields has gone on a seven-fight winning streak. His latest addition to the list was Ido Pariente whom Shields defeated by rear naked choke in little more than two minutes at the K-1/EliteXC co-promoted Dynamite!! USA.
There is a tremendous amount of speculation as to how many fans were in the seats at the L.A. Coliseum on Saturday night, but there is no doubt that the fight airing live on the Showtime premium channel will surely increase Shields’ visibility amongst American mixed martial arts fans.
Despite currently ranking as the #9 welterweight fighter in the world by MMAWeekly.com, Shields has been one of the most overlooked fighters in the division. Part of that was likely due to what was perceived as an unexciting style that Shields utilized, winning many of his fights by decision. Maturing as a fighter and making a conscious effort, he has finished his three most recent opponents either by submission or TKO.
Since entering the UFC as part of the third season of The Ultimate Fighter, Ed Herman hasn’t had an easy go of it. He made it all the way to the finals of the show before losing a Majority Decision to Kendall Grove. In his next UFC fight, Herman was submitted by Jason MacDonald. His last fight out finally put Herman on the winning track armbarring Chris Price in less than three minutes.
As part of the UFC’s debut in Nortern Ireland, Herman returns to the Octagon, looking to establish himself as a contender. On June 16th, he’ll get his chance when he steps in the Octagon against UFC veteran Scott Smith.
