Sarah Kaufman Again Without Opponent; Amanda Nunes Out of TUF Nations Finale Due to Injury

April 8, 2014

Amanda Nunes Dislocated FingerLess than a week after agreeing to fight Sarah Kaufman at The Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale on April 16, Amanda Nunes has had to withdraw from the fight due to injury.

Nunes announced her withdrawal on Tuesday via Instagram.

Nunes had originally been scheduled to fight Alexis Dufresne on the UFC on FOX 11 card on April 19, but Kaufman’s original opponent, Shayna Baszler, dropped out due to injury. That is when Nunes agreed to move to the April 16 card in Quebec City, Quebec, to fight Kaufman.

A dislocated finger has now forced her out of the opportunity to fight the former Strikeforce bantamweight champion.

“I was really excited to fight Sara,” Nunes wrote on Tuesday. “This was a great opportunity for me. Unfortunately I dislocated my finger and it will have to wait.”

With little more than a week to go until fight time at the TUF Nations Finale, UFC officials will have to scramble to try and keep Kaufman on the card.

One possible option could be a call to Invicta FC fighter Leslie Smith. Shortly after the news of Baszler’s injury circulated, Smith (6-4-1) offered to take the fight with Kaufman (16-2, 1 NC), but the UFC instead called on Nunes.

With Nunes now out of the picture, the promotion could grant Smith the rematch that she so desperately desires.  The two ladies fought to a controversial split decision last April under the Invicta Fighting Championships banner. The closely contested bout earned the Fight of the Night award.

There has been no comment from UFC officials yet and what route they will pursue now that Nunes is out of the fight.
