Former UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Champion Randy “The Natural” Couture will take part in a submission wrestling event next month. On November 17th, the Professional Submission League will be promoting an event called ‘X-Mission’. Couture is scheduled to face Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

The name Randy Couture has been synonymous with the UFC. “The Natural” retired from the sport after his third and final fight with Chuck Liddell back in February. Couture’s upcoming fight will mark the first time he has competed in a martial arts based competition since his retirement.

“It’s a fun opportunity for me to get into grappling. I never had the chance to do the competitive grappling stuff because of fighting,” said Couture. “I’m looking at it as something to motivate me to go to the gym, continue to train and just enjoy the competition.”

“Training is going pretty well,” added Couture. “I’m crawling back into shape, getting my sprints in and getting back into competitive shape.”

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza is an ADCC and World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion. Couture’s upcoming opponent is well known in the Jiu-Jitsu world. Coming into the fight, the recent UFC hall of fame inductee could have a weight advantage of almost 40 lbs. over Souza.

“He’s [“Jacare”] not terribly big, he’s 185-190 pounds. He’s a very accomplished Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. It should be very competitive,” commented Randy. “I’m going to come down to 225 [pounds] for the match. I’m around 230 right now so that shouldn’t be too big of a problem.”

So will we see Randy competing in more submission wrestling competitions in the future?

“I don’t know, we’ll see how it goes,” replied Couture. “I’m certainly not opposed to the idea. I love wrestling and I love grappling.”

‘X-Mission’ is scheduled for Friday, November 17th at the Culver City Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Culver City, CA. Participants also expected to appear include Jake Shields, Javier Vazquez, Jeff Glover, Shane Rice, and Bill Cooper.
