Paige VanZant Says the UFC Ranking System Isn’t Accurate, ‘Whatsoever’

September 3, 2015

Strawweight sensation Paige VanZant (5-1) is currently ranked eighth in the UFC women’s 115-pound division. On Saturday, she’ll step into the Octagon for the third time, taking on unranked Alex Chambers (5-2) on the UFC 191 main card.

Some have criticized the match-up, saying the 21-year-old should be fighting someone in the top 15 rankings, but VanZant doesn’t see it that way. In fact, she doesn’t think the ranking system is an accurate reflection of her division.

“I think the people who see this as a step down don’t know a lot about women’s MMA, or the strawweight division. They don’t realize how new of a division that this is,” she said during a recent media luncheon.

Rankings are in constant fluctuation based on recent performances. They’re subjective and ever changing. Outside of the top two or three strawweights, VanZant doesn’t put much stock in the rest of the rankings.

“A few at the top, I do see them to continue to stay at the top, but outside of the two or three, I don’t see these rankings as accurate whatsoever,” she said.
