The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Monday officially announced its debut event in Indianapolis. UF 119: Mir vs. Nogueira 2 is scheduled for Sept. 25 at the Conseco Field House.
Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir and former interim titleholder Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will rematch in the main event. Mir won their first go around becoming the first fighter to finish Nogueira. He scored a TKO stoppage in the second round at UFC 92.
Mir enters their rematch coming off of a TKO loss to Shane Carwin. Nogueira is also trying to right the ship after being knocked out by Cain Velasquez at UFC 110 in Australia.
“Ever since Frank Mir beat Nogueira for the (interim) heavyweight title in 2008, Minotauro has asked me for this rematch because he wants to prove that the first fight was a fluke,” said UFC President Dana White.
“On September 25, he gets his wish, and I don’t think there’s any fighter more motivated than he is to even the score. As for Frank Mir, he
wants to get back in the title picture, and if I know him, he was the first man to knock Nogueira out at UFC 92, and now he’ll want to be the first man to make him tap out.”
Nogueira’s brother, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, is slated to fight in the co-main event in Indianapolis. The Top 10 light heavyweight faces
two-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler Ryan Bader.
Also on tap for UFC 119 is a rematch of “The Ultimate Fighter: The Comeback” finale when former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra
faces Indianapolis’ own Chris Lytle.
