Michael Johnson on Split Decision Loss to Beneil Dariush: ‘Every Body Knows I Won That Fight’

August 11, 2015

When UFC octagon announcer Bruce Buffer read the judges’ scorecards after the UFC Fight Night 73 co-main event between Michael Johnson and Beneil Dariush at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Saturday, the crowd rained down boos of disapproval.

Johnson dictated the pace, dropped Dariush in the opening round, and stuffed every takedown attempt that his 26-year-old opponent attempted.  Most in attendance and watching at home thought Johnson clearly won the fight, but they were wrong. The judges scored the fight for Dariush by split decision.

“I definitely thought that I pushed the pace a lot more the whole fight. I stuffed every one of his takedowns, and I landed more. I don’t see how they could have gave him the win,” said Johnson during the event’s post-fight press conference.

Johnson hoped a win would move him into title-fight discussions. Instead, he saw a four-fight winning streak come to an end. Reflecting on the outcome, the 29-year-old said, “That’s why you don’t leave anything to the judges.

“I feel like I pushed the pace every second of the fight. And that’s what I did,” he added. “I’ll try not to get on a card with these judges, I guess. I can’t control that. It is what it is.”

Johnson was furious with the decision immediately following the fight, but tried to be as respectful as he could during the press conference following the event. But he said what most people thought when the decision was read.

“Every body knows that I won that fight. There’s no way that I could have lost.”
