Michael Bisping Would Have Risked Health for Georges St-Pierre

November 3, 2016

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping called out Georges St-Pierre. He also called out Nick Diaz. But when those fights didn’t come to fruition and Luke Rockhold dropped out of his upcoming fight with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, why didn’t Bisping jump in and put his belt on the line against the No. 3 contender in his division?

After all, if it looks like a duck. If it sounds like a duck. Isn’t it a duck?

Not so, Bisping said on Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight, which he co-hosted.

Michael Bisping - UFC 204“I’ve never ducked anybody in my life,” said Bisping. “Now, I know what everybody at home is going to say. ‘Didn’t you call out (Georges St-Pierre) a couple of weeks ago?’ Yes I did, but really, think about this: That was a massive payday, roughly $3-4 million dollars I would have earned for that fight. Against Jacare, I’m going to get around about a quarter.”

The champ went on to explain that he has injuries that he is working to heal, which also played into his decision. Bisping seemingly would have risked fighting injured for the payday that a St-Pierre fight card promises, but not for Jacare.

“As you all know, I fought Dan Henderson very recently. I have a fractured orbital,” he said. “I’m getting PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections. I don’t know what they are, but it sounds fancy. I’m getting them on Friday in my leg. I’m limping around the place. I’ve got a fractured orbital.”

Once he recovers, Bisping appears to have set St-Pierre and Diaz by the wayside, indicating that he would next put his belt on the line against one of the division’s top contenders.

Jacare was supposed to fight Rockhold, but that fell apart with No. 1 ranked Rockhold pulling out due to injury. Chris Weidman is ranked No. 2 in the division. He’ll face Yoel Romero, who sits at No. 4, on Nov. 12 at UFC 205 in New York City. Bisping said someone from that pool of fighters will be next for him.

“Next week, Yoel and Weidman, they are fighting. Whoever wins that, either that guy or Jacare will be my next fight, make no mistake. But, I’m not doing it in a few weeks,” he stated.

“My name isn’t ‘Short Camp Sally,’ it’s Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping, UFC middleweight champion of the world. And you will get it Jacare, and you will get it Yoel, Weidman, Rockhold, all of you. Make no mistake.”
