Mixed martial arts veteran Vladimir Matyushenko, fighting for just the second time since his 2003 loss to Andrei Arlovski, was victorious in the main event of the Extreme Wars: Bay Area Brawl event this past Saturday in Oakland, California. Matyushenko defeated Anthony Ruiz by submission in the first round with an armbar.
The main event of this card was originally scheduled to pit Pride and UFC veteran John Marsh against K-1 star Carter Williams, but Marsh had to pull out of the event several weeks ago due to a training injury. When Marsh’s replacement, Terrell Dees, had some problems with his California State Athletic Commission physical this week, Williams’ fight had to be pulled from the card entirely.
On the undercard of the event, the rise of welterweight Carlos Condit was derailed, at least temporarily, by a submission loss to Pat Healy via rear naked choke.
Also, Antonio McKee won a close fight over Ronald “Machine Gun” Jhun via split decision, and the huge Justice Smith (of WWE Tough Enough fame) was dismantled in his MMA debut by the even bigger Shane Carwin.
