It is possible Askar-Mozharov might have underestimated Marcelo Tenorio. If that’s the case, it proved to be a costly mistake by the Russian, who was submitted early in the opening round by the Brazilian middleweight at Full Metal Dojo 10.
Mozharov looked extremely confident before the fight and wasted no time before shooting for a takedown and putting Tenorio on his back in the first few seconds of the opening round. From there he went to work with a barrage of ground and pound, but despite coming from a Muay Thai background the Brazilian kept his composure.
As Mozharov rained down punches looking for a fast finish Tenorio threw his legs up, looking for an opening in which to attack with a submission attempt of his own. In his haste to finish the young fighter got careless and left an opening for the older man to lock in an armbar.
The tap came at the 0:58 mark sparking triumphant celebrations from Tenorio whose record improves to 3-1. Mozharov looked stunned, perhaps he wasn’t expecting the Muay Thai veteran to have such a strong submission game, and he falls to 4-2.
The co-main event pitted Iran’s Ali Motamed against Israeli Toni Hitmanos and it was the former who emerged victorious. A jab from the experienced amateur dropped the European and from there he went to work with ground and pound before transitioning to a rear naked choke.
Motamed ran up an 8-1 amateur record, while competing in South East Asia before making his professional debut earlier this year. He is now 2-0 overall, while it is back to the drawing board for Hitmanos who drops to 0-1.
Earlier in the evening, Frenchman FX Leal de la Torre and American Trevor McKenzie put on arguably the fight of the night. The former is a long term resident in Phnom Penh, but was unable to prevent his opponent from scoring a takedown and spending the majority of the opening round in top position.
In the second round, Leal de la Torre started to come on strong and demonstrate his superiority in the striking department but once again McKenzie was able to get him down and this time he capitalized with an armbar. The American improves to 1-0 while the French fighter drops to 0-1.
