It appears that Manny Gamburyan’s return to the UFC will be postponed for a bit. The Armenian fighter has sustained a back injury and will not be able to compete at UFC 128 against scheduled opponent Raphael Assuncao.
Gamburyan, a former finalist on the successful Spike TV reality show The Ultimate Fighter was to make his return to the Octagon for the first time since January of 2009, when he lost a unanimous decision to Thiago Tavares. Since then, “The Anvil” dropped a weightclass to featherweight, joining the WEC and winning three out of four fights in that time – the last bout being a knockout loss to UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.
Assuncao, a highly regarded 145-pound fighter, is coming off unanimous decision win against LC Davis at WEC 52. Although he has lost two out of his last three outings, Assuncao still boasts a 15-3 record with WEC wins over Jameel Massouh, Yves Jabouin, and the previously mentioned Davis.
No replacement has been named for Gamburyan at this time, but stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com for the latest information on the fight as it becomes available.
UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones is scheduled to take place on March 19 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
