Now that the cat is out of the bag and UFC President Dana White has made it very clear he wants Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez in the UFC, let the debate begin on his first fight there.
While nothing has been inked yet as far as Melendez’s deal to come to the UFC, he’s in Houston to witness the lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard and he’s very clear what he wants.
Melendez has put in his time, 10 wins over top ten opponents, and a recent winning streak that includes victories over Shinya Aoki and Tatsuya Kawajiri. Now the Strikeforce lightweight champion is ready to fight the best of the best in the UFC and settle any debate on who the No.1 155lb fighter in the world is.
“I think I’m the No. 1 contender. Go look at my record, look who I beat, what they were ranked when I beat them, look at their record when I beat them,” said Melendez. “I beat the Dream champ, I beat the Shooto champ, I was the first WEC champ, I beat the DEEP champ, I’ve avenged both my losses and I come to fight and not to win rounds.”
The Strikeforce champion will be seated front and center when Edgar and Maynard square off in Houston, and he’s making his intentions known that he wants the winner for his first fight in the UFC.
