The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Thursday officially announced three of the main card bouts for its UFC 84 fight card on May 24 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

As expected, the main event features new lightweight champion B.J. Penn against former champion Sean Sherk. The bout will be Penn’s first defense of the title since winning the belt at UFC 80 by defeating Joe Stevenson. Sherk will be attempting to wrest the title that he never lost away from the Hawaiian fighter.

The UFC stripped Sherk of the title following a suspension by the California State Athletic Commission due to a positive steroid test result in July of 2007.

Despite losing to former UFC champion Chuck Liddell at UFC 79, Wanderlei Silva has remained a popular fighter since emerging in the U.S. He will face Keith Jardine, who owns a win over Chuck Liddell and is likely nearing a shot at the light heavyweight belt.

Also announced for UFC 84 is another light heavyweight showdown. Tito Ortiz is on the last fight of his current contract with the promotion and is expected to part ways with the UFC win or lose. He faces Lyoto Machida, who holds an undefeated record and has to be regarded as another of the top contenders for a title shot, especially if he gets a high profile win over Ortiz.
