Mackenzie Dern Misses Weight Badly, but UFC 224 Fight Reportedly Still On

Despite Mackenzie Dern missing wait rather badly at Friday’s UFC 224 weigh-in, her opponent, Amanda Cooper, has reportedly agreed to keep the fight intact.

Dern is one of the most decorated grapplers to ever enter the Octagon. She has a proven history of beating the best competitors in the world when they hit the mat. Unfortunately, since transitioning to mixed martial arts less than two years ago, she now also has a history of difficulty making weight.

Mackenzie Dern misses weight at UFC 224Dern is 6-0 as a mixed martial artist. Of those six bouts, five have been scheduled at strawweight. Her UFC 224 bout with Cooper was also slated for strawweight, which has a non-title fight limit of 116 pounds. Following Friday’s botched weigh-in, Dern has now missed weight three times, but this was the worst yet.

In 2016, Dern weighed 118.8 pounds for a Legacy FC bout, and in 2017, tipped the scale at 120 pounds for an LFA bout. For UFC 224, she weighed a whopping 123 pounds; a full seven pounds above the limit.

Cooper stepped on the scale about 30 minutes after Dern on Friday, hitting the upper limit on the nose at 116 pounds.

According to multiple reports out of Brazil, however, Coooper has agreed to receive a percentage of Dern’s show money to keep the fight intact. The Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) fined Dern 10-percent of her purse, while the UFC docked her an additional 20-percent. The combined 30-percent of Dern’s show money will reportedly go to Cooper.

With Cooper agreeing to take the fight with Dern, the UFC 224 fight card remains fully intact with 13 bouts. Dern vs. Cooper is slated to be the third bout on the UFC 224 pay-per-view main card.
