Arguably the top pound-for-pound female fighter in the world, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, made her UFC debut on Saturday in her hometown of Curitiba, Brazil. She faced Leslie Smith, who accepted the fight that many turned down against the Invicta featherweight champion, at a catchweight of 140 pounds.
Cyborg knocked Smith down with a right hand early in the opening frame. Smith quickly started to defend herself as Cyborg tried to finish the fight. She rolled to her side and the referee stopped the fight at the 1:21 mark of the first round.
Smith protested the stoppage inside the octagon, and later said that she was “pissed” about it on Instagram.
“I’m pissed as hell about the stoppage. The fights that were allowed to keep going in the same cage on the same night showed that my fight was total bull,” she posted.
“Now I have to go home to everyone who made sacrifices for me to get to this fight and even though they might not hold it against me I know it was a huge disappointment. I’ll fight her again asap as long as there is a legit ref like Herb Dean.”
