Julia Budd Wants to be the Champ, Face of Bellator’s 145-Pound Division

November 18, 2015

Heading into her debut fight with Bellator in February against Gabrielle Holloway, featherweight Julia “The Jewel” Budd not only wanted to get the win, but also shake off any lingering effects of having been out of fighting for a year.

While Budd was able to pick up a unanimous decision victory, she feels like she could have performed better in the bout.

“It was about getting rid of that ring rust and getting my feet wet and getting rid of those nerves and stuff you get after not having fought in a long time,” Budd told MMAWeekly.com. “I wasn’t happy with the decision. I wasn’t happy that I wasn’t able to finish the fight. At the same time I was happy to get a win with Bellator.”

Budd admittedly started slow, but once she found her rhythm, she felt the fight was hers.

Julia Budd“After the first round I got (the cobwebs) out of my system and was able to find my groove in the second and third round,” she said. “I really wanted to make sure that I fought again this year so I didn’t have such a long layoff and got as much experience as possible.”

Budd (7-2) return at Bellator 146 on Friday in Thackerville, Okla., to take on undefeated prospect Roberta Paim Rovel (4-0) in a 145-pound feature bout.

“I think she’s a good opponent,” said Budd of Rovel. “I never underestimate anyone. I want to put the pressure on her and use all my skills to beat her.

“I know who I am as a mixed martial artist now. I’m more confident with all my skills and experience. I feel like I’ve fought the best in the world and I’ve been in the big shows and have that under my belt. Before I was just a Muay Thai fighter, but now I’m better-rounded.”

While Budd wants to take one fight at a time, she has her mind set on something big in 2016.

“One of my goals is to win on Friday night, and then my goal is to be Bellator champion and be the face of their 145-pound division,” she said. “I have that goal and want to keep heading in that direction and overcome any obstacles.”
