John Phillips Ready to Defend at BAMMA 26: ‘The champ needs some dosh!’

September 7, 2016

Since returning to MMA in 2015 after a nearly two-year break, BAMMA middleweight John Phillips has been on a tear. Over the course of his last three bouts, Phillips has finished all of his fights and captured the promotion’s 185-pound title.

And while his success has helped take him to the highest point in his career, for Phillips, it’s about his continued growth as a fighter that is the most important thing.

“I don’t see a winning streak as winning,” Phillips said to MMAWeekly.com. “You either win or learn in this game.

“My past few fights have all come from good preparation in the gym and I believe that’s where the fight is won or lost. I’m a bit gutted I couldn’t be more active over the last year, but I plan on making up for that.”

While he might not have been as active as he would have liked, winning the BAMMA middleweight title in February against Cheick Kone was a big moment in his career, nonetheless.

John Phillips - Cage Rage“Winning the title has been unbelievable to be able to call myself a world champion is phenomenal,” said Phillips. “It’s a goal I’ve had from a young boy.

“I always wanted to be crowned a world champion in some sort of combat sport. Career-wise, it gives me a lot more exposure and puts me that step closer to getting on to the bigger cards.”

Phillips (19-6) will defend his newly won title for the first time on Saturday in Dublin, Ireland, in a middleweight championship co-main event against Andy DeVent (13-10).

“DeVent is a tough guy,” Phillips said. “I have to have my wits about me. I think the key to victory will be me stuffing the take downs and using my striking.”

Following his bout with DeVent, Phillips is eager to return to action sooner than later and add some hard earned money to his bank account.

“As 2016 comes to a close, I’d like to be on as many cards as possible,” he said. “The champ needs some dosh!”
