Shields (29-6-1, 1 NC) continues his climb back up the welterweight ladder, topping Demian Maia with a split decision at UFC Fight Night 29 in October. The win was Shields’ second in a row since a no-contest against Ed Herman in August of 2012. The grappling expert is currently ranked sixth in the MMAWeekly.com rankings.
Lombard (33-4-1, 1 NC) came into the UFC on a wave of hype in July of 2012, but was halted by Tim Boetsch in a split-decision loss. Since the Octagon debut, Lombard has only gone 2-2. Each of his wins, however, have been decisive knockouts, one over Rousimar Palhares and the other most recently over Nate Marquardt.
UFC 171 is headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and No.1 contender Glover Teixeira.
