Is There Enough Talent for Ronda Rousey to Establish a Legacy in Women’s MMA?

Posted on by Ken Pishna

Ronda Rousey StrikeforceStrikeforce recently put on one of, if not thee, biggest women’s fight in mixed martial arts history.

And this was under the ownership of Zuffa, the same company that owns the UFC. The same company that is run by Dana White, who has gone on record saying there are not enough talented fighters on the women’s side of the sport for him to consider putting a division in the UFC.

The question now, after such a smashing success of a fight between Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey, of course, is, “When are we gonna see women’s MMA in the UFC?”

Don’t count on it happening any time soon.

While White believes that Tate vs. Rousey was every bit the fight and more that people expected, he holds true to what he has said in the past.

“I feel the same way about (women’s MMA) as I did three weeks ago,” he said recently. “What just happened is what I’ve been saying all along. There’s not enough great women to create an entire division, but there’s gonna be these one-off fights that will be great.”

White was beyond pleased with the fight that Tate and Rousey put on in Ohio on March 3. He just doesn’t feel that fights such as that are currently sustainable over the long term in women’s MMA.

In fact, he believes that Ronda Rousey – who defeated Tate via armbar in the first round – could be one of the most talented women’s mixed martial artists in history. He just doesn’t believe that she will be granted the opportunity to prove her legacy.

“I think Ronda Rousey is unbelievable and I think she’s gonna be a huge star. But unfortunately, I think she’s gonna end up being a Lucia Rijker of our sport. She’s so nasty, I just think there’s not enough competition out there for her to really test her and really have her showcase in some great fights.”

Many boxing aficionados considered Rijker the top women’s boxer in the world, but like White feels about Rousey, most pundits believed that Rijker never had enough high-caliber competition to prove herself.

“If you look at a guy like Anderson Silva… Anderson Silva has gone up against everything the 185-pound division had to offer and some guys at 205,” explained White. “He’s had his low moments, but he’s been able to look spectacular. You can say this guy is gonna go down (in history) if not the best, as one of the best ever.

“Ronda Rousey is not gonna have a career where there’s gonna be all this amazing talent you can throw at her that she can beat.

White summed up Rousey’s conundrum, saying, “We knew we had a great fight between two very talented women. The difference is I have 375 guys that do that every day. I have two women.”

It seems like a chicken and egg argument. You can’t have women in the UFC because there aren’t enough good female fighters? If Dana made half an effort to promote women’s MMA, rather than barely tolerate it, perhaps more young athletic girls would consider jumping into it.

As a long time MMA fan, I love watching the women fight. And it isn’t for the sexual thrill of seeing two hotties writhing around. I dig it for the same reason I like men’s MMA. It’s awesome to see two well trained athletes go after each other with everything they have.

Personally, I don’t think Dana White much gives a shit about the fans. He treats the UFC like it’s his toy only, and he will play with it as he pleases.

Cyborg is the ONLY one in the woman’s game that could even begin to challenge Rousey. She has a tough road ahead with the lack of talent out there, otherwise.

Cyborg is too big for 135. She’s struggled making 145. Plus she’s a juicer. When the star of female MMA got busted for steroids, my interest in female MMA went down drastically.

Cyborg got a pair somewhere stuffed or hidden but the jewels are there. Cyborg is a dude.

Glad to see women’s MMA isn’t gaining a foothold in Dana’s mind. I do not want to see it in the UFC.

Women’s MMA right now is like the early days of men’s MMA. Maybe they should just have open weight tournaments or … wait, I got it!
An ULTIMATE FIGHTER season for women !!!
    I are teh genious.

    • TKD

Yeah, an Ultimate Fighter for women…I guarantee they will have at least 50 people watching that big event.

Most stacked women’s categories are the lower, like <52kg (flyweights, strawweights, …), in fact exists only-females hi-rated organizations such the japanese Jewels and Valkyrie …

yeah the Strikeforce women divisions are not really stacked, btw if u merge it with all the other organizations rosters like Cage Warriors, Jewels, Valkyrie, Bellator, ProElite, Invicta, … will born a very great female organization!! And they must try to put in all the best females in boxing, judo, and other olympic sports …

Actually fighters that seems unbeatable are:
    - Cristiane Santos (FW)
    - Ronda Rousey (BW)
    - Megumi Fujii (FW – widely dubbed the best female fighter of all the times)
    - Ayaka Hamasaki (FW)

… but WMMA is growing well …

zzzzzzz…Wake me up when they start talking about something anyone cares about…

Rousey has no stand up but easily beats the dull plain Jane boorish Sara Kaufman. Cyborg the man destroys Rousey and this should be avoided. Cyborg has jewels and is a chemically made lab experiment filled with steroids and every other drug and hormone available. Cyborg is one a man and half human more robot and a lab creation than anything. Rousey needs to beat on plain sara beat another nobody and move on to a career in movies where she can be bigger than the 200lb carano. Rousey has a future but not in woman’s MMA which is about over when strikeforce ends.
