Gunnar Nelson Details Injury That Knocked Him Out of UFC Liverpool Co-Main Event

April 30, 2018

Reports first broke on Saturday that an injury had forced Gunnar Nelson out of his scheduled bout with Neil Magny at UFC Fight Night 130. The two were slated to act as the co-main event on May 27 in Liverpool, England.

Nelson, on Sunday, issued a statement detailing his injury and timeline for recovery.

“Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from my fight against Neil Magny on May 27th in Liverpool,” Nelson wrote on Facebook. “Last weekend, I injured my knee. I will undergo an operation right away and I’ll be out for 8-10 weeks. I’m sorry to my family, my opponent, my teammates, the fans, and the UFC.”

Gunnar NelsonIt was certainly disappointing for Nelson, as he hasn’t set foot in the Octagon in nearly a year, and his last bout didn’t go as he had hoped it to, either. Santiago Ponzinibbio knocked the Icelander out a little more than one minute into the first round of their UFC Fight Night 113 headliner on July 16 of 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“This is a huge blow to me and I’m at a loss for words to describe the disappointment I am feeling. I was really feeling up for this fight, the training camp was going great and everything was just perfect until this happened,” Nelson continued.

“When all is said and done, this is the fight business and injuries are sometimes an unfortunate part of it given the physical rigors us athletes put our bodies through. I will keep on evolving as a fighter while I’m on the sidelines and I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

There’s no word yet on the UFC’s plans for Magny or the co-main event in Liverpool, although a replacement opponent is likely being sought at this time.

American Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Liverpudlian Darren Till are slated to headline UFC Fight Night 130 in a welterweight battle that could easily put the winner just one or two fights away from a title shot.
